Question
I have two coins:
1853 type 'a' in 'good' condition.
1854 type 'w' in 'fair' condition.

Are they worth anything and if so how can these be sold other than through E-bay?

Many thanks.

Answer
Hi Peter,
The 1853-A (Paris mint) coin is a better date, while the 1854-W (Lille mint) is a common one.
Value really depends on your definition of good and fair. If you are referring to the standard definitions for the grade, that would mean both of these are well worn and as such would not have a significant value. The listed collector values on these coins start at fine or better condition, which is a coin with about 50% wear.
On the other hand, if you are referring to the general state, and not specific coin grades the coins are worth a combined $15 in middle grades.
If you would like to post a follow-up question with a picture of the coin, I can give you more specific information on the condition and value.
Either way, eBay would be your most convenient and effective option. A private auction or website (unless you already have an established merchant website) will have associated fees that are likely as much or more than the value of the coins. I have sold many coins like this on eBay and found that the amount of collectors there is abundant.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
