Question
I have a 1868 Napoleon III french .50 cent coin. is it worth anything?

Answer
Hi Erin,
The 1868 50 centimes coins were made in Paris and at Strasbourg. The value really depends on which one you have. If you look below the date, there will be either a letter A for Paris or a BB for Strasbourg. The A coins start at $5 and go up to $150 or so depending on if you have a well used or a mint condition coin. The BB is rare and ranges from around $75 to nearly $1,000 in the same condition range (this is actually higher than listed book values for this date).
If you would like to post a follow-up question with a picture of the portrait side of the coin, I can give you a more exact grade and value for it.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
