Question
I have a coin I cannot identify. On one side around the edge it has what appears to be a wreath of ivy with unidentified lettering inside. On the other side is a scimitar above what appears to be two islands with lettering below. There is writing around the rim of this side of the coin.
The lettering is in a script I cannot find or identify.

Answer
Hi John,
This sounds like a 1 pai or 2 paisa from the Baroda state of India and would date from the late 1800's. value on these is not significant, up to $10 in excellent shape for the best years.
I can certainly give you a more exact date, grade and value if you post a follow-up question with a picture of the wreath side of the coin.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.

Experience

Collector of world coins since early childhood. Access to a variety of auction records and reference material. You can also find me on Facebook.
