Question

Coin
I have a Denmark commemorative coin that seems to commemorate the rule of King Christian IV. I have included a picture. Could you tell me anything about where this came from please?

Answer
Hi Robert,
This coin is not just to commemorate Denmark, it is official legal tender from the Danish government.
If you are wondering why this coin is not found under Denmark in the Standard Catalog of World coins, that is because this is a "medallic" issue. These are not listed in the normal Krause book, but they are in the supplemental edition "Unusual World Coins". There were 100,000 of these commemorative Ecu coins made  and they sell for $30 to $50 each.
The ecu denomination is something you see from several European countries and is sort of like a secondary coinage (much like gold trade ducats).
If you need any more info just ask a follow-up.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
