Question
I have a question regarding the prices of a few coins actually. I have come across a 1915 copper 3 kopeck piece that is still shiny copper, i also have 2 different 2 kopeck pieces from 1821 and 1817 which are still in good condition. i have an 1859 5 kopeck piece, and last an 1899 pure silver rouble with a picture of tsar Nickolai II. If you know how much those might be worth it would be very appreciative, also if you know how much a 2000 year old roman coin might be.

Answer
Hi Jeff,
Nice older Russian coins have been really hot in the past few years. so much that the most current book values are not even reliable and are too low for the practical prices that the coins fetch.
The 3 kopeck 1915 in mint condition with original luster would bring at least $50 at auction, though a professionally graded coin would do $100+ in a retail shop.
The 1817 and 1821 2 kopecks in mid-grade are worth around $20 a piece. You can always post a follow-up question with a picture of the coins and I will give a more exact value.
The 1859 5 kopeck will range anywhere from $10 for a well used coin to around $25 for a mid-grade. One in excellent condition is scarce and would bring $100+.
The 1899 rouble ranges from $25 to $1,000 depending on condition. A typical, used but not too well used coin would be around $50.
Ancient Roman coins are not something I have ever dealt with.
Thanks for the question. =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
