Coin and Paper Money Collecting/Wheat penny

Question
Why were ears of wheat placed on the back of the wheat penny?

Answer
Hi Marylin,

I can find no references to Victor D. Brenner's design of the reverse of the "wheat" cent as to why he chose this design.  I can only assume that since wheat is a grain of great importance in America that it was used.  America the Beautiful was written in 1895 and refers to "Amber waves of grain", maybe that is where Mr. Brenner got the idea.
