Question
I have a box of coins from pre-world war 2.  My uncles collected them while serving in the Navy during WWII.  There are 1/2 pennies and pennies from Australia,  Dutch coins and several with Nazi swastikas.  How can I research to see if any are of any value

Answer
Hi Mike,
Some of the larger public libraries will carry a copy of the "Standard Catalog of world Coins 1901-2000". It will likely be an older copy, but it's a good starting point to find out if you have any of the better dates.
You can also make a list of the denominations and dates and send them to me as a follow-up question and I will give you that information. With the German coins there are also mint marks, a small letter such as A, D, E, J, F, G, etc. on the coin. Condition is important to value, of course, but you may as well find out if you have any dates that would have a significant value first.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.

Experience

Collector of world coins since early childhood. Access to a variety of auction records and reference material. You can also find me on Facebook.
