Question
What is the value of a gold 500 Shilling Republik Osterreich 1996, mint boxed commerative of Weiner Philharmoniker. It was given as a gift.

Answer
Hi Dan,
The philharmonic commemorative would be a 1992. There were 43,000 made and the coin contains just over 1/4 ounce of pure gold weight. They usually sell for 25% or so above the gold bullion value of about $300. One like yours in a special presentation box would be right around $400 at auction, on the current market. A retail price in a good coin shop would be more in the range of $500 though.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.

Collector of world coins since early childhood. Access to a variety of auction records and reference material. You can also find me on Facebook.
