Question
Hi I was wondering if you could tell me the worth of this coin, its a 1857 40 centesimos, Republica Oriental Del Uruguay , it looks like the edge was hammered.it has a sun on one side

Answer
Hi Nola,
Tyically this Uruguayan coin ranges from $5 in decent shape to over $100 in miont condition. The damage you describe would certainly hurt the value, but just by how much really depends on how bad the damage is and the overall condition of the rest of the coin.
If you would like to post a follow-up question with a picture of the coin, I can give you a much more accurate estimate.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.

Collector of world coins since early childhood. Access to a variety of auction records and reference material. You can also find me on Facebook.
