Question
i have a coin that has 1821 ferdin V11 dei gratia on one side and on the other side it reads hispan et ind rex z 8r r g is this coin worth anything..........look forward to your reply

Answer
Hi Andy,
This is an 8 reales or "pillar dollar" from Mexico, the Zacatecas province, during the War of Independence period (1810-1821).
This is actually the most common date from the series, with prices ranging from around $30 for a well used coin to $150 or so for one in mint condition.
There is also a more rare over-date variety for this date. If you can see the remnants of an 8 underneath the 2 in the date, this one is worth 5-6 times that of the regular one.
If you would like to post a follow-up question with a picture of the date side of the coin, I can give you more specific information on the condition and value.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
