Question
I have a 1644 coin with the following markings:
Side A: MON:NOV:GLUCKSTAD 1644  III SCHILLING ?G
Side B: CHRISTIAN:4:P:G:D:N:REX
My family is from Norway, and Christian the 4th was the king of Norway in 1644. What else can you tell me about the coin? Any idea what it may be worth?
Thanks,
Carter

Answer

Hi Carter,
This is definitely a Norwegian silver 3 schilling coin. Aside from the historical information written on the coin, I can only add that these were also used in Denmark at that time.
As far as value, a decent example like the one in the attached picture is 400 Danish kroners, or roughly $75 on the current market.
I have seen some go for even more on eBay though, as high as $130 in decent condition.
If you would like to post a follow-up question with a picture of the coin, I can give you a more specific value.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
