Question
My daughter found an 1864 Empire Francis 50 cent coin. It has Emperor Napoleon III on the front and a Crown on the back and was wondering if it is worth anything?

Answer
Hi Victoria,
You have a French silver 50 centimes, which does have some value. Just how valuable it is really depends on the condition and the mint where it was made. If you look just below the date there will be a small mint mark, either a letter A, BB or K.
The A and BB mark coins range from $5 for a well used coin with no damage to $100+ for one in mint condition and still shiny. The K mark is more scarce and ranges from $15 to $200+ in the same conditions.
If you would like to post a follow-up question with a clear picture of the coin I can give you more accurate information on the condition and value.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
