Coin and Paper Money Collecting/European & Foriegn Coins & paper money
Expert: Brad Swain - 3/9/2010
QuestionHi Brad, I have recently found a box full of coins & paper money that my grandparents saved from their world travels in the early 1960's. We are downsizing & these seem pointless to keep so if they are worth anything, we would love to sell them. The paper money ranges from Switzerland to the United Country of Arab & plenty countries in between. The coins range from England to China, & I'm assuming Egypt. Most are dated between the 40-60's but I have a coin from Cuba from 1915 and a few strange coins with a small hole in the middle of them (maybe french or middle eastern) from 1920. Lastly, there is a very dark coin with a lion on one side and a woman sitting on the other dated 1870 & says Cien Piezas En Kilos at the top. Any help would be amazing & I hope to hear back from you soon!

AnswerHi MaryBeth, Collector value of a note depends on date, denomination (face value), series letter or signature and condition, including amount of wear, any folds, tears or stains as well as collector demand. You might also try a library for a copy of the Standard Catalog of World Paper Money for pictures, values and lots more interesting info.

Collector value of a coin depends on denomination (face value), date, mint mark (if any), number minted and condition of a coin, including amount of wear, any dents, scratches or cleaning as well as collector demand for it.

The mystery coin is from Spain.
If you start by listing them by Country, Denomination and Date, I may be able to give you a range of value estimates if its not too many.
