Question
Hi Dmitry,I have a coin stamped on one side with
"FERDIN VII DEI GRATIA 1825"this goes round the edge of the face with a head profile in the middle. The other side has
"HISPAN ET IND R.T(or)J.I.l around the edge with a coat of arms in the middle. Unfortunately it has had a loop soldered on so it can be attached to a watch chain. Can you tell me what it is and if it has any value?
Many thanks,
Clive.

Answer
Hi Clive,
The characters you describe belong to a Spanish colonial 1/2 real or reales silver coin from Bolivia. This would be a tiny coin that weighs less than 2 grams. There are larger denominations as well, but they would read "HISPAN ET IND REX" instead of "HISPAN ET IND R". The T after this legend is actually a tiny PTS monogram, which stands for Potosi (the city where the silver was mined and the coins made).
A decent example with an attached loop is worth $10 to $15. Without the loop it would have been $15 to $25.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
