Question
I found a medal in the ground on an old air force base.  It is bronze with a hole in the top and has a profile of a man on the front.  On the back across the middle is the word "erinnbrung."  Around the edges are GEST AM H__ __ IGEN PFINGST TAGE D. 7 JUNI 1840.  GEB D. 3 AUGUST 1770.  the blanks are where the hole is cut.  I wondered who the man was and why he was being remembered.  Thank you for your help.

Value revised:

Hi Elaine,
This is a death medal of Friedrich Wilhelm III, ruler/monarch of the German State of Prussia. It is made of copper. In excellent condition it is worth between $50 and $100 depending on where it is being sold. In worse condition I would not expect to get above the $20-$25 range.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
