I have a coin mentioned in the subject block...it is in excellent condition...marked on one side: Field Marshall Wellington. on the opposite side: a Harp and the year 1805. I have attached a photo of same. My question is one of worth if any. I am looking to gain knowledge concerning it's value if any at all. Thank You very Much.

Answer
Hi Pat,
There are several varieties of these Canadian colonial "Wellington" tokens. Most are only worth a couple of dollars in decent shape, but this is one of the better ones.
The last one I saw sold on the Canadian eBay site for the equivalent of about $40 US.
Some problems, however: This particular one had been dug out of the ground and then cleaned, which would cut the value by half. Also, the American market for these is not as strong as in Canada.
If you put it on eBay today it should do $10 to $15.
The reference info for this variety is: BRETON #976, CHARLTON #WE-5. (Breton and Charlton are catalogs for these types of items).
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
