Question

Zwei Gulden
ZWEI Gulden(stamped on the side , 1879 Cannot find anywhere in the catalogs

Answer
Hi James,
This Austrian 2 gulden (equal to two florins) is a medallic issue. Although it was officially issued legal tender these are not listed in the normal coin books, though you may want to try the Krause publication "Unusual World Coins", which has all sorts of medallic and fantasy issues (both official and not).
The value on this piece ranges from around $15 silver melt value up to $100 for a mint condition coin. Based on the picture yours is a mid-grade example, though the attached loop takes a little away from the value. A good auction estimate on this piece would be $20 to $30, assuming the other side is in equal condition. Without the loop it would have been $25 to $40.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
