Question
Hi Dmitry,This next coin i believe to be silver, on one face it has:-

GVL?ELMVS.III.DEI.GRA. around the edge with a hesd in the middle.

On the other side it has:-

MAG.BR.FRA.ET.RIB.REX.1697.  This goes round the edge with four symbols effectively at north, south, east and west. These symbols are three lions,a harp, what could be three fleur de lyse and possibly an eagle. All of these symbols have a crown above. The coin is very worn and again has a loop soldered on to hang from a watch chain. Please can you tell me what it is and if it is of any value?
Once again, many thanks.
Clive.

Answer

Hi again Clive,
This would be a 1 shilling coin from Great Britain, made of silver and depicting king William III. A decent, undamaged coin starts in the $30 to $50 range. With the condition issues you described, the value would be under $20.
Thanks again! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
