Question

medal coin 1883
Hello Dmitry,
I have found a medal/coin when sorting through my nan's bit's and hope you can tell me a bit about it and if it is worth keeping. It looks like it is made of bronze and weighs 136 grams the size is 69mm with smooth edges. On the face with the head printed on it around the side it has WILLEM III KONING DER WEDERLANDEN HOOG ESCHERMEER VAN DE TENTOONSTELLING and on the other side it has INTERNATIONAL KOLONIALE EN UITOERHANDEL TENTOONSTELLING AMSTERDAM 1883. I would be very grateful on any information you could send me regarding this medal/coin.
thankyou
Jackie

Answer
Hi Jackie,
This is indeed a medal from the Netherlands and commemorating the 1883 Amsterdam International Colonial & Export Trade Exhibition. I have seen a few sell recently which were in excellent condition. Those sold for right around $40-$50 (roughly 30 pounds).
Unfortunately the one pictured is in rough shape. As such, it would be worth around 5 pounds.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
