Question
We have two coins for which we would like information.
One is a bronze colored coin with male face on front that says "Geogivs vi d: g: br: omn:rex f:d: IND IMP." On the back is a full figure seated holding upright a trident. The date is 1938.
The other is also a bronze colored coin with a female face on front that says "REGINA F: D:+ Elizabeth. II Dei.GRATIA".  On  the back is a full figure seated holding upright a trident. The date is 1962.
Both coins say one penny.
Can you tell us about these coins?

Thank you.

Answer
Hi Vivian, There were 121.6 million of these bronze British pennies minted in 1938 and it features King George VI (1936-52) on one side and on the other side is the allegorical figure of Britannia with shield and a trident which symbolizes Britain's mastery of the seas and worldwide empire. The abbreviated Latin legend stands for By the Grace of God, Ruler and King of Britain, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India. It may be worth about .15 with heavy wear to around .35 with moderate wear to maybe $1 with light wear.
There were 143.3 million of the 1962 pennies minted that feature Queen Elizabeth II (1952-). It may be worth .10 with any wear to perhaps $1 if uncirculated (no wear).
You might also try a library for a copy of the Standard Catalog of World Coins for pictures, values and lots more interesting info.
