Question
my aunt has some old coins...i was wondering if you could tell me how much they are worth:
she has a 1966 coin that says 5 and groschen on one side and republik osterreich on the other with an eagle like bird with a crown on its head, a sheild on its chest. could you tell me where its from and how much it maybe worth?

Answer
Hi Shannon,
This 5 groschen is from Austria. They are fairly common because they are considered modern coins. The value would be around a dollar in mint condition. Austrian coins in general do have value, but you have to get down to the pre-World War II coins for the values to get decent.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.

Experience

Collector of world coins since early childhood. Access to a variety of auction records and reference material. You can also find me on Facebook.
