Question
I have an old coin dated 1791.  The embosing is worn so I can't identify which country it is from. On one side it has the figure head of a king.  The name appears to start with L and followed by a U or O and then a D I can't makeout the rest.  On the other side is a sheild with a crown on top the only inscription on this side that I can make out is REX  1791 FRANCIA E.  Do you know where this coin ay originate and value?

Answer
Hi Rosemary,
This is a copper 1/2 or 1 sol from France, depicting king Louis XVI. The legend around the head is LUDOV XVI. There are several mints that produced these, but the value on any of them in rough shape will be $3 to $5. These coins are quite valuable in excellent condition, but are very common to find in well used or salvaged condition.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
