Coin and Paper Money Collecting/1804 Swedish coin

Question
I am in possession of coin minted in Sweden. It is silver and about the size of a U.S. quarter. On the front it reads Gustaf IV Adolph SV-G-OCII V-Konung and has a head and shoulders profile of a royal personage. On the back it reads Gud Och Folket above the royal "three crown" Swedish symbol. The date at the bottom reads 1804. Is this a collectable?

Answer

Hi John,
Sounds indeed like a Swedish 1/6th riksdaler. The genuine piece should weigh 6.25 grams in mint condition, though a coin with wear will be slightly lighter.
There were over 2 million of these coins made in 1804 and the book values range from $11 for a well used coin to $85 for one with minimal signs of use. In reality, the prices tend to be a lot higher. For example, the middle grade coin in the attached pictures lists for $20-$30, but is currently being sold for 75 euros (about $100). The better the condition, the higher the premium on the listed values.
If you would like to attach a photo of the coin to a follow-up question, I can give you more exact info on the condition and market value.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
