Question
I have a coin it has no money value marked on it , on the front it has a crest and at the top and bottom it says Canada and 1867..on the back it says The Maple Leaf and has a picture of 3 maple leafs..what is this coin ? is it really from 1867 or is it some sort of commemoration coin?

Answer

Hi Colin,
This item actually dates from the early 1970's, when a whole series of them were made and given out by the Shell Gasoline company. These were intended to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Canadian confederation (1867-1967). Aside from the medallion you have, there were also ones for the different provinces and would have the flower most significant to that province.
In mint condition, like the one in the attached photo, it's worth around $5. In worse condition it would only sell for a couple of dollars.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
