Question
QUESTION: Dmitri:
Hello.  I have an 1895 Prussian Kaiser Wilhelm 5 mark coin, probably fair condition with a couple of "rimdings."  Can you give me an estimate of its value?  Thanks, Neal

ANSWER: Hi Neal,
An average circulated example of this coin usually sells for around $25. With rim dings that are not too major, it would be around $20. Really bad rim dings would reduce it pretty much near silver bullion value, which is around $10 for this coin.
I can give you a more exact estimate of you post a follow-up question with a picture of the coin.
Thanks for the question! =)

QUESTION: Dmitri:
Follow-up; attached is a jpg file of the coin.  I'll send one of the back, too, if you need. Neal

Answer
Hi again Neal,
These look like pretty minor rim dings. The good thing is that they don't cut into the design on the front. As long as they do not look any worse on the back this coin should sell for $20-$25. as far as the detail I would grade it as a solid VF (Very fine). The coin also has not been cleaned an has original patina, which is always a plus to most collectors.
Thanks again! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
