Question
I have a 10 Centisimi coin dated 1866.  On the front is a bust of a man and written around the perimeter of the coin is "Vittorio Emanuele II D'Italia".  can you tell me about the coin and its worth?

Answer
Hi Dan,
First off I apologize that you had to wait for an answer. The expert you initially asked the question had passed it along and I had only seen it just now.
This is certainly an Italian 10 centesimi coin, as you said. There is not too much historical information that relates to it. One thing of interest is that they were made at several different mints. If you look at the bottom below the "10 centesimi" there will be a letter, may be R, H, N, or no letter. This will affect the value of a coin in excellent condition.
Since there were several million of these amde each year and at each mint, they are very common in well used condition. The value with either mint mark, in well used condition is only going to be a couple of dollars. In excellent shape with minimal signs of wear you can get $10 to $25 depending on the mint. Mint examples with original red luster are rare and will be worth upwards of $100 for even the most common mint.
Let me know if you have any additional questions or would like to post a picture of the coin so I can grade and evaluate it.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
