Question
why are there grooves on the edge of a quarter
Reeding on the edges was first done so that if the coins were shaved, people could notice. Remember that our old coins were silver and gold and if someone shaved enough coins, they would have a nice pile of gold or silver.
By putting the reeding on the edge, it is easy to see if the coin was altered.
