Question
Hi, I read that one reader has the same coin I do, so I appreciated the information.  This coin is in mint condition and could be worht $5 plus.  MY QUESTION:  who do I contact about the purchase of my british pence?  thanks.  Willma Hill

Answer
Hi Wilma, There were 26.4 million of these bronze British pennies minted that year and it features Queen Victoria (1837-1901) on one side and on the other side is the allegorical figure of Britannia with shield and a trident which symbolizes Britain's mastery of the seas and worldwide empire. The abbreviated Latin legend stands for By the Grace of God, Ruler and King of Britain, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India. It may be worth about .25 with heavy wear to around $3.50 with moderate wear to maybe $20 with light wear to perhaps $60 if uncirculated (no wear).
You might take it by a local coin shop for a first hand opinion and you might try Ebay.com for similar pieces for comparison. You might also try a library for a copy of the Standard Catalog of World Coins for pictures, values and lots more interesting info.
