Question
Hello Mr. Livshits,

I have a friend that brought this coin in and we have no idea what it is worth.  I was wondering if you could help.

I would put it between vg and f.

Thank you for your time.

Charley

Answer
Hi Charley,
Are you using strict US grading guidelines? If so, then your coin is likely a solid F or even a little better. The grading on most foreign coins, including Philippines under US administration is a bit more liberal than US grading.
The 1918, which was struck at the San Fransisco mint, is a fairly common date with over 2 million minted. Again, when thinking of  US coins, you may think 2 million is low mintage. However, Philippines coins from this period were mostly made in numbers of 2 million and less, many as low as just a few hundred thousand.
The value on a decent, but well circulated example lists in the most recent book at $3.75, although the actual value if sold on eBay is more like $5 plus a couple of dollars for shipping.
For reference purposes, this coin is made of .750 purity silver and contains just a little less than a quarter ounce of pure silver weight.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
