Question
QUESTION: i found this silver penny in my change jar, at first i thought i was seeing things, i thought it was a dime. i looked under the magnifier and it is a 1987 silver oenny in excellent condition. looks lkie it was just minted, all shiny like a new dime. its not the size of a dime, so im sure its a penny. ive read about others who have them. are they valuable ?

ANSWER: Hi Karen,
It could be valuable.  We would need to determine just what it is.  Since the US Mint doesn't strike silver coins for circulation anymore, it is probably a coin blank meant for a dime that was left in the minting press.

I have handled pennies struck on top of already struck dimes.  They trade in the $250-$750 range.

However, I really would have to see the coin and examine it.

QUESTION: i assume you dont make house calls and im not sure how comfortable i am with sending it through the mail and if its worth anything i dont want to loose it. im not saying everyone is out to steal it but the older i get the less i trust. tyvm

Answer
Hi Karen,
If you are located near my office on Long Island, I make housecalls.  Beyond that, the possible value would not warrant my traveling to you.

I understand your concern regarding shipping the coin.  If you have the ability to send digital photos, I may be able to help you.  otherwise, you may have to contact a local dealer to appraise the coin.  However, don't sell it just yet.  It may be worth more than the appraiser tells you.
