Question

Mexican 8R Coins
What is the best method of determining the value of the 8-Reale coins dated 1818, 1822, and 1890 shown in the attachment?  Also, what is the best method of offering these non-US coins for sale?

Answer
Hi Richard,
I must say, this is a very nice group. The 1822 Empire of Iturbide issue is by far the best one of the lot.
All of these are from Mexico, as you probably are aware. The 1890 is the cheapest, with a practical auction value in the $30 to $40 range. The 1818 is $50 to $75.
The 1822 piece you have is actually a relatively high grade example. These were crudely struck; to see clear separation in the waves of the hair on the obverse portrait is a really nice feature. There are several variations for this date. The one you have is KM # 306.1 in the Krause-Mishler "Standard Catalog of World Coins" (1801-1900). I would expect between $400 and $500 for this example.
Your best bet for selling these is eBay. Please take heed that you will need clear close-up images, along with an accurate description and also good feedback to get into the ranges I've given for these coins.
Based on the attached pictures, you should have no problem with the photography portion, which is arguably the most important part of selling a coin.
Thanks for the question! =)

CommentDmitry Livshits' response was both thorough and clearly stated. The timeliness, less, than 24 hours, was also excellent.

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
