Coin and Paper Money Collecting/Coin selling

Question
Hello,

I have a $5 gold coin made by the Pacific Company of California in 1849. It was found in a coin collection given to me by my late grandfather. It is in good shape and easily identifiable. I looked up the value in a couple coin books and it varies between $180K-$300K. I would be interested in selling it, but have know idea where to start? I would appreciate any advise about this trade that you could give me because it is not something I have experience with. Thank you for any help you can provide.

Sincerely,

Scott S. Roberts

Answer
Hi Scott,

The values of $180k to $300k are not accurate. More realistic is $50k to $120, especially in this economy.

First off, we need to determine if the coin is genuine before we think about selling it.  Upon inspection, if I believe it is genuine, then we need to have it certified as such and graded.
Once the coin is certified and graded then we can begin to find a buyer.
Needless to say, if it is genuine, it is valuable however finding an active buyer willing to pay top dollar may be tough in this market.

However, I do have a few ideas on that.  But let's determine authenticity first.
