Question
Hi and thank you for your time !
I have a large Britiannia coin date 1797.
Appears to be copper anad has Georgius .... REX on it.
It's about the size of a silver dollar and I don't see a denomination on it.
Any idea what it is?
Thanks again,
Walt

Answer

Hi Walt,
This is a British two-pence, or two penny piece. If you can imagine having to walk around with a handful of these in your pockets!
This kind was only made for one year, in 1797, although there were millions of them made.
They do have collectible value, which really depends on the condition. A well used coin without any damage or problems like cleaning or corrosion is worth $5 to $10. One in excellent condition, like the one in the attached picture, is worth $75 to $100. The values are much higher for a mint codnition coin with no traces of wear at all.
If you would like to post a follow-up question with a clear picture of the coin, I can give you exact info on the grade and value of your coin.
Thanks for the question! =)

CommentThanks Dmitry! This is exactly what I have. Hopefully 2 pence would buy enough that you wouldn't need too many of them. What a chunk. Mine is pretty used. Probably would fit into the $5-10 range. Very interesting and helpful reply. Thank you very much! Waly

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
