Coin and Paper Money Collecting/Luxury Tax Token

Question
I have a coin/token that has the following on it:
One side has "Alabama State Tax Commisssion" with a star and 2 fives on it. The other side has "Luxury Tax Token" with a star and 2 fives on it. Is it worth anything? If so, do you know how much it is worth? Thank You

Answer

Hi Sheila,
These tokens are quite common and the collectible market for them is limited. A nice, shiny example is worth a couple of dollars, but a well used or damaged one has no real value.
There are a few scarce tax tokens out there, but the one you describe is a fairly typical one.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
