Question

Weird "mint mark"
Hello,

I have a 1976 nickel featuring a weird "mint mark". It doesn't look like a letter at all, altough you might say it's D-shaped. Please have a look at the attached picture. I think this is some kind of mint error, but can you tell me more about it?

Answer
Go ahead -- show it to 10 more people -- I bet you get the same response.

Thanks for nothing for your feedback.

Jake,

Considering the condition of the rest of the coin pictured, I would have to say that the mintmark has been damaged too.

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.
