Question
I found the above coin in my Dad's WWII memorabila. He was on the USS Lexington when it was sunk in the Coral Sea and rescued to Australia. What do you know about this coin? Thanks, Jeri

Answer
Hi Jeri,
This was one of the last years that this type of coin was issued. It is made of silver (.640 purity) and comes from the Dutch East Indies, which is modern day Indonesia. It makes perfect sense that your father picked it up while on and around the Australian continent.
The sentimental value would be much more than the current market value of the coin, however. This is a common date, with tens of millions that were made. The collector value is no more than $5 even in perfect condition.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.

Experience

Collector of world coins since early childhood. Access to a variety of auction records and reference material. You can also find me on Facebook.
