Question

1908 Olympic medal
Sorry I forgot to attach picture.
Original question: I purchased this medal on ebay.  I thought I was buying a commemorative medal.  But after checking various sources I found out it is not.  Do you know any information on what I have purchased.  My grandfather participated in the 1908 Olympics for Canada.  That is why I was interested in this medal.   Thanks for you time

Answer

Hi Mary,
This is actually a modern novelty medal made with a similar design to the actual gold, silver and bronze medals given out to the 1908 winners.
The originals were designed by Bertram Mackennel, a famous Australian sculptor. The design of this medal is actually facing in the opposite direction. The design depicts the "Dragon-slayer" motif which is seen on some English & Commonwealth coins from the 19th and early 20th centuries.
As a novelty piece, there are no auction records for one like yours. The value would not be significant, perhaps $20-$25 considering that the quality of the piece is quite good. Many replicas are very crudely made and are not worth anything.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
