Coin and Paper Money Collecting/Ultra Cameo vs Deep Cameo

Question
I purchased several NGC graded coins listed as Proof 69 Ultra Cameo.  My reference books refer to "Proof Deep Cameo."   Is "Ultra" a better grade than "Deep?"  Or vice versa?  Tks.

Answer
Lee,

Ultra is better than Deep -- it's a stronger contrast between the mirrored fields and the cameo features.

Generally speaking, with improvements to the minting process, the newer the proof coin, the more likely it will be an ultra cameo, rather than a deep cameo or just cameo.

Ultra cameos on older coins (like Franklins or Morgans) are much more valuable than deep cameos because they are so rare.  Modern coins have many more ultras available, so the Ultra Cameo does not have as much of an added value over the Deep Cameo.

I hope this helps,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.
