Question
I have a small coin collection. How do I go about preparing my coin collection for appraised?
Thank you.

Answer
Robert,

If it's small, you may be able to just take it to a coin show and have a couple dealers look at it there.

There are several items you can take out because they have no added value :

Any non-silver circulated coins from 1960 or newer.
Any Jefferson nickels newer than 1950
Any Kennedy Halves newer than 1970

Any Eisenhower dollars that are not S-mints or proofs have no added value -- same applies to any non-proof Susan B. Anthony dollars.

Wheat pennies from 1934 to 1958 are generally only worth about 2.5 cents apiece -- you should seperate them out.

Sorting out the above items should significantly pare down the number of coins a dealer would need to look at to do the appraisal.

I hope this helps,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
