Question
QUESTION: hi Joe,i just discovered this web page via google search and was wondering if you could reanswer your 12/2/2006 post regarding coins and their values? I'm guessing gold was about 625 oz. back then. Any generic gold coin dates would answer my questions (i've done a little bidding on an auction site so i'm looking for some general guidelines). thanks greg. ps. i promise to leave you positve remarks:)

ANSWER: Hi Greg,
You have to repost the question.  I can not go back and revisit old questions.

Joe

QUESTION: hi Joe, what i'm trying to learn is standard weights and values for american gold coins. for example; what are the gold contents and cash values for an 1880's $5 gold half eagle, or $10 gold eagle. thank you for your time. greg

Answer
Hi Greg,
The way the system was set up is as follows:
a $20 gold piece contains .9675 of an ounce of pure gold.  $10's are half of that, roughly .48
$5's are roungly  .24 and $2.5's are .12
Based on that and assuming gold at $1200  figure the $10 is worth about $600 and the $5 is worth about $300
