Question
QUESTION: I have an indian head cent(vf) that definitely looks like a 9/8.  Have you heard of this variation?

ANSWER: Matt,

There is a well known variety of the 1869 penny that is a 9 over 9, but was thought to ba a 9 over 8 for many years.

What year is yours?  Do you have pictures?

Dan

QUESTION: Mine is an 1890, vf condition.  I was aware of the 69 restrike but have never heard of an 1890 with 9/8/
I don't have a camera good enough to photogragh the coin though.

Answer
Matt,

Repunched dates happened on many years of the Indian Head cents -- why the 1869/9 is the only widely known and priced one I do not know.  There is no standard price guide (as far as I know) for other dates.  I recently found an 1889/889 in my inventory -- not sure how to price that one either.

I suggest you register at the CONECA error coin club website :

http://board.conecaonline.org/register.php?do=signup

and submit your question to their Error-Variety Coin forum :

http://board.conecaonline.org/forumdisplay.php?f=2

There are many error coin experts there that should be able to answer your question(s).

I hope this helps,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.
