Coin and Paper Money Collecting/lost and found

Question
I was cleaning out my car and found a piece of metal that resembles a coin.  It's a bit worn, I can't make at some of the lettering.  It's smaller than a dime and about half as thin.  On one side it looks like there's a large C with stars around the outer edge and maybe a roman numeral 2 in the center.  On the other side, United States...(can't make out the 3rd word) is written across the top, with the possible date of 1852, or 1952,on the bottom, and in the center it looks like a Jewish star with maybe flag strips in the middle.

Answer
Anne,

What a strange thing to find in a car!

What you've found is an 1852 silver 3-cent piece.

It originally looked like the one pictured here :

In the excessively worn condition you describe, it's value is just a couple dollars.

I hope this helps,

Dan

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.
