Coin and Paper Money Collecting/missing clad layer

Question
I have a 1968 D dime that is missing both sides of the clad layer. The thickness is about a third of a normal dime, and the circumference is smaller that a regular dime by the size of the raised edge. What type of error is this and the possible value.

Answer
Martin,

The way you describe the coin, it appears to be missing more than just the clad layer.  If missing just the clad layer, it would still be about 80-90% of the normal thickness, and the diameter would still be the same as a normal dime.

Not seeing it first hand, I cannot be sure, but it sounds like your coin has been altered at some time after it left the mint.

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.
