Coin and Paper Money Collecting/rare or misprint

Question
I have a state quarter "California 2005, D" it does not have a smooth, shinning finish as other state coins, it looks like a very fine sheet of sand paper finishing to it evenly front and back, Is this a rare or misprint and if ether what would it be worth?

Answer
Julius,

What you have is probably a satin finish coin that came out of an uncirculated coin set -- rather than a regular finish one that came from mint bags.

Starting in 2004 the mint changed the finish used on coins made for the uncirculated sets to this satiny finish that looks like what you describe.

They don't have a significant collector value.

Expertise

My strong familiarity with all U.S. Mint coins, extensive reference library, and close relationships with many other dealers allows me to identify just about any coin made in the USA. I receive regular updates to all the current price guides -- both wholesale & retail -- to provide accurate values. So, with a good description or pictures, I should be able to identify and value any U.S. coin you have.

Experience

I've been a coin dealer since the 1980's and a coin collector since the 1960's. I specialize in U.S. Silver Coins and have an active online website -- The Working Man's Rare Coins -- http://www.workingmancoins.com -- offering information and inventory in U.S. coins.
