Question

5 kopeks 1804 Kolyvan
Hi I have stumbled upon Russian 5 kopeks 1804 Kolyvan Mint coin, Can you please point me in the right direction on how to find a value for it. its in ok condition, both sides still seen clearly, it does have a slight sratch on the bevel edge, I have atached a similar coin, but the year is different and the KM initials are on other side by eagles feet.

Answer
Hi Raitis,
It is difficult to really give an accurate value without seeing the exact coin. These are crudely made and the coin you have may be in better condition than you think.
The scratch on the edge: if it is an old scratch, that will not affect the value very much. If it is a new scratch, with the metal in the scratch shining like it is new, that will hurt the value.
Because the KM mint mark is so hard to find, a decent used coin would sell in the range of $75 to $100 and one in excellent condition for $250 and higher.
If you would like to post a follow-up question with a picture of the coin I can give you better information on the condition and value.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
