Question
I found a Mexican coin dated 1844 the inscription on the back reads 8R G 1844 P M 10D 20G
also a Spanish coin which reads  HISPAN ET IND REX M 8R F M above the first M is a small o
I was hoping you might be able to tell me what these coins are and what they might be worth
Thank You very much Frank

Answer
Hi Frank,
Both of these coins are Mexican. The 1844 coin is from the Guanajuato mint. Prices range from $15 for a well used coin to around $100 for one in excellent shape. Typical examples that I see tend to sell for around $25-$35.
The earlier coin is Spanish colonial, but made at the Mexico City mint (the M with an O over it). You did not mention what year this coin is, and that can have a significant bearing on the value. For the majority of dates, one in good shape without damage or other problems is right around $100. In rough shape it can be as low as $25, while in mint condition they are rare and would be in the $200 to $300+ range.
If you would like to post a follow-up question with a clear photo of the coins (this site only allows 1 photo per question) I can give you an exact grade and value.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
