Unsure coin...
Unsure coin...
QUESTION: Hello :),
I recently came across my grandmothers collection of European and Asian coins and found this one, it doesn't seem to fit wish any of the other coins that look similar, they all specifically say they are dutch but this one does not. Would you know?
Thanks,
Rachel

ANSWER: Hi Rachel,
Your coin is a 5 "ore" from Sweden. It's in good shape and could have a decent value depending on the year. I cannot make out the date from this picture, but if you post a follow-up question with the year on the coin I can give you a value for it as well.
If you come across any other Scandinavian "ore" coins from this period, here is a helpful way to tell them apart: Sweden will have the three crowns like your coin does, Norway will have small crossed hammers, usually in the middle of the date, and Denmark will have a large crowned letter C.
Thanks for the question! =)

QUESTION: Thanks for the response!
The year says 1892. Besides that it seems pretty simple with the information you gave me now sorry bout the picture my phone isn't very good. :)
Thanks again,
Rachel

Answer
Hey Rachel,
It's all good. Cell phone pics are not great, but when necessity strikes it's a lot better than nothing.
The 1892 is one of the cheaper dates, unfortunately. The book value on this coin would be around $10, but it would only sell for about half that on eBay or the like. If you come across any of these coins from the late 1870's or early 1880's in good shape, the practical value will be from $25 and up to as much as $100.
Thanks again! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
