Coin and Paper Money Collecting/1764 Coin

Question

1764 Coin
I am trying to find information on a 1764 coin that my uncle has had for 20 years. The pictures were taken by a cell phone so I hope it is clear enough to tell what it is. I have not seen the coin in person so I cannot tell you what the words say. I have not had any luck find any coins with the 4 crowns. The other side appears to have 2 of the British lions (I think) on the shield. I hope you can help.

Thanks,
Brian

Answer
Hi Brian, this is either a silver 1/2 or 1 Kronenthaler, depending on size. It is from the Austrian Netherlands (Belgium). Collector value for a 1764 1/2 K may be worth about $30 with that amount of wear and a mintage of 500,000. The 1 K may be worth about $40 and had the same amount minted.
You might also try a library for a copy of the Standard Catalog of World Coins for pictures, values and lots more interesting info.

CommentThank you for your fast response and expertise. I did finally find pictures of the coin on the Internet with your help. When I added "Maria Theresia" to the search, the exact coin came up. I never would have found it if you did not get me on the Austria Netherlands path. Thanks again. Brian
