Question
My brother has a coin, friedr wilhelm iii koenig von preussen, other side DRE1 FINEN  R THALER  1800.  There is a hole drilled at the top, It has wear. Bust showing left face on one side and coat of arms on thaler side, eagle with crown over laurel wreath?  with an A at the bottom.  Is it silver and does it have any value.  Thank you very much.

Answer

Hi Camille,
You have a 1/3rd thaler (their equivalent of 1/3rd of a silver dollar) from the German State of Prussia. Prior to the unification of the German empire in 1871, the modern country of Germany was a group of many individual states with their own kings and queens. Prussia was one of the largest and most powerful of these states.
The coin is indeed made of silver, 0.666 purity. These coins are popular with collectors and command good prices when they are in good condition. Unfortunately, for a coin that is holed and worn a practical value is silver bullion price plus a couple of dollars.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.
