Question
My grandmother left me a collection of foreign world coins. I have been going through them and comparing their values on ebay when boom!! It looks like this 1885 Newfoundland 10 cent piece is rare and possibly valuable? help!

Answer
Hi Thomas,
You certainly do have a rare coin. This is the top key date for the Victorian Newfoundland 10 cent series. Only 8,000 coins were minted. I don't know if you collect US coins or not, but a US coin from that far back and with such a low mintage would be worth a small fortune. Unfortunately the Canadian market is not as strong, but it's still a pretty valuable coin. The key factors are originality and condition, in that order. To give you any kind of accurate info on your coin I would need to see a clear, close-up picture of it. This site only allows one picture per question. If you can do pictures of the front and back, please attach them to two separate questions. If you can only get one good picture, it would have to be the portrait side and you can attach it to either a follow-up or a new question. Originality and condition are all about the fine details.
I should tell you in advance that if your coin is original and in great shape, it's most certainly something worth keeping rather than selling on the current market.
Thanks for the question! =)

Expertise

My specialty is world coins from the 18th to 20th centuries, primarily non-US foreign coins and related areas such as errors and exonumia (tokens, medals, etc.). I can answer questions relating to identification, grading, selling, preservation and evaluation of such items. In addition to catalog value, I can give you the practical market value and trends for specific types of coins. I will also take questions regarding counterfeits (both modern and antique) and on how to identify them. I am NOT knowledgeable in paper money/banknotes, ancient or "shipwreck" coins. Thank you.

Experience

Collector of world coins since early childhood. Access to a variety of auction records and reference material. You can also find me on Facebook.
